About the Instructor -Master James Pongrass /6th Dan

I have always been fascinated by martial arts. I used to watch Kung Fu theater on the weekends (with all those flying kicks and death blows that each man could take a thousand of and keep fighting with out losing a step) One day in 1980, my Mom brought home a flyer that was on her car about a karate school having a grand opening demonstration. I jumped at her offer and went up to the karate school and immediately joined. I was one of first few students to join that school. I was so proud and excited to finally to get to practice in a real martial arts school.

From that day Tae Kwon Do became my life. It changed me in many positive ways. I was formerly disrespectful and destructive. Those negatives vanished very shortly after my training began. I started coming to my scheduled classes every week, but soon that was not enough. I began coming early and practicing on my own. Soon that was not enough and I was then staying late after classes were over. Pretty soon I was there every day from open to closing. I would kick the heavy bag, work on kicking and punching drills, go over my patterns, etc. I was a Tae Kwon Do maniac.

In time, my instructor (Mr. Frank Santarose, now a 7th Degree Grand Master) must have seen potential in me, but more importantly he saw the desire and passion for my quest for excellence. I tested for my first degree in June of 1983.  I was so happy, words truly can’t even describe. I contunued to train with my whole heart. Somewhere around 1986, Mr Santarose asked me if I would like to open my own school. I was very interested, however I new that I was not ready for that commitment or responsibility yet. Early in 1995 something clicked and it was time for me to open my own Tae Kwon Do school. Since then I have continued to teach and share my knowledge with other like minded students who I help reach their goals as people and as martial artists.
